Make a passport photo

Turn a photo you took yourself into a passport-size photo. A guide shows where the top of the head, the eyes and the chin should be, and you download the photo at 600 dpi or as a sheet of copies to print at any photo service.

100% private: processed on your device, nothing is uploaded.

This tool only sets the size and the position of the head. The official rules for background, lighting, expression, glasses and how recent the photo is still apply. You are responsible for checking them with the authority that issues your document.

How it works

  1. Choose a photo: taken straight on, against a plain light background, with even light on the face.
  2. Pick the photo size, then move and resize the frame so the head fits the blue lines and the eyes the yellow band.
  3. Download the single photo, or the 10×15 cm print sheet and order it as a normal photo print.

What the guide is based on

For 35×45 mm photos, the guide follows the Dutch photo requirements (the Fotomatrix of the RvIG): from age 11, the head from chin to crown must be 26 to 30 mm high. For US 2×2 inch photos it follows the US Department of State: the head 1 to 1⅜ inch, with the eyes between 1⅛ and 1⅜ inch from the bottom. Other EU countries use the same 35×45 mm size, but their head-size rules can differ slightly.

For children up to age 10 the Dutch rules allow a smaller head (from 19 mm), so the chin may then end above the blue band.

The rest is up to you

The tool gets the size and position right, but it cannot check everything else. Official requirements also cover a plain light background, even lighting without shadows, a neutral expression with the mouth closed, eyes open and visible, no glasses with reflections, and a recent photo. Check the current rules of the authority that issues your passport or ID card before you apply: they decide whether a photo is accepted, not this tool.

Printing your passport photos

The print sheet is a 10×15 cm (4×6 inch) image with several copies of your photo and thin grey cutting lines. Order it as a regular photo print at a photo shop, drugstore or online service, and choose “no cropping” or “fit” so the photos keep their exact size. The single photo has 600 dpi printing information, so “print at actual size” on your own printer gives exactly 35×45 mm or 2×2 inch.

Frequently asked questions

Will my passport photo be accepted?

We cannot promise that: only the issuing authority decides. This tool makes sure the size and head position match the published measurements; background, lighting, expression and image quality depend on the photo you start with.

How do I take a good photo for this?

Stand in front of a plain, light wall in daylight, facing a window, so there are no shadows on your face or behind you. Let someone else take the photo from about 1.5 metres away at eye level, without zoom effects or filters. Look straight into the camera with a neutral expression.

Can I use this for a visa or a driving licence?

Many visas and driving licences use 35×45 mm photos too, but some countries use other sizes or rules. Check the requirements for your document first; if the size matches, you can use the 35×45 mm setting.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Your photo is opened and cropped in your own browser and never leaves your device. That matters for a photo of your face that ends up in an identity document.

Why is the photo saved at 600 dpi?

Photo printers print at 300 dpi or more. At 600 dpi the photo stays sharp at its real size, and the file is still small enough to send or upload.
